So I'm trying to start a new art habit of starting and finishing a study every day (thanks :iconmaciejkuciara:), and this is the result of yesterday's beginning effort. Spotted a photo of athlete Stacie Tovar and decided it'd be great figurative practice. I ended up spending too long on it and didn't quite nail the proportions, but it's momentum nonetheless.

FIgure Study No.1 by MatthewHuntley
FIgure Study No.1
Hello all! It's been a busy semester, and although I haven't posted much, I have been working feverishly. Early on I realized a great way to practice the technical aspects of painting, without having to worry about composition or conceptual things, would be to work from photos. I sourced the original image from girlswithmuscle.com This proved to be a really great practice and really helped to expand my abilities. I did a few of these over the semester, some better than others, which I'll be uploading soonish, along with the everything else as it's finished.

The Encounter by MatthewHuntley
The Encounter
This is a piece I recently made for the Art Order Tethered by Letters contest as a potential cover for the book F(r)iction 2. The contest called for an underwater theme which related a sense of discovery and the danger lurking in the ocean's depths. The piece is a wraparound cover, with the right most portion being the front (where the scuba guy is) and the left half being the back. Entering was a real treat, and I can't wait for the next contest.

Hey all! I recently created and submitted a piece to a contest asking for the creation of ocean themed cover art for a collection of short stories and other written works. I'd greatly appreciate it if you could follow this link (www.infectedbyart.com/contestp…) to view the work and share it with people you know! I plan on uploading it here after the contest ends, but until that time it's exclusive to the site Infected By Art, who are hosting the contest.

50ft Woman Vs King Kong by MatthewHuntley
50ft Woman Vs King Kong
Whew, so this one. This is from an earlier painting class at Herron (about a year ago now) where we had to create something that was integrated into the environment- a site specific work. In this instance, the battleground depicted is what would actually be seen if the wall my picture was hung on inside the school had a hole punched through it. I was attempting to fool the viewer (the border of the hole matched the color of the wall, for instance), though obviously it's not a realistic enough image for that to work. I learned a lot while making this, but was ultimately disappointed with the final product, thus the long delay between painting it and posting it here.

One big thing I've been learning to overcome in regards to art-making is the fear of failure and accepting what one has done in the past as a part of the journey to getting better, and I think sharing this is part of that.
